$60 per week on groceries . . . for my family?

Recently, I was beginning to wonder about the rising costs of my weekly grocery bill as lately, I found myself spending $250 per week or more to feed my family of five. Granted, I know I am paying more for organic, natural choices and we do like our snacks and desserts, but still is it just me spending this astronomical amount on food?
Then I see them! All the news stories about these crazy rising costs of groceries. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the increases I am seeing in my shopping cart can be basically attributed to a couple of reasons, the first being some serious drought conditions affecting farmers and the second? What else, but the price of oil, of course.
I was intrigued when I caught one particular story on ABC’s Good Morning America a couple of weeks ago which claimed to show me how to shop for $60 per week per couple by cooking most everything from scratch. Now, by my calculations, this should translate to about $150 or so for my family of five with some prepackaged foods thrown in there as well, right?
It is with much excitement and interpretation, I might add, that I have decided to give myself a $150 grocery budget challenge starting this week! So far, so good! The week is almost up and I still have $30 left over today to buy milk, yogurt, cheese toilet paper and maybe even a latte treat for myself!!

I’d love to see how it’s done. I am a single person and I spend a fortune on food. Average is about $60 a week for just me–altho I do cook for my son a lot–but frequently my bill is higher than that, say if I actually buy meat, or fish, or need some expensive household item. I don’t know how anyone manages these days with kids.
Hello!
This is Jodi Balis from the Good Morning America segment that was featured a few weeks ago. I am THRILLED that you have undertaken this project to feed your family for $150.00.
I am cheering for you!! Good luck and just make sure to enjoy your successful recipes and laugh at the ones that may not be as successful- always try those again too
Happy Eating to you and your family,
Jodi Balis
Thanks very much! Will keep the world updated in how we survive and how much we save!
I would looove to learn how to make things from scratch!
I’m 19 years old, not completely independent yet, but university food is expensive and mostly unhealthy/junk food, so cooking for myself without chipping off a giant chunk of my savings on groceries would be a great thing to incorporate into my lifestyle.
If you’ve got recipes to share from your challenge, I’d love to try them!
Good luck!
