Thursday Thirteen . . . what I’m missing.
![]() |
Seeing as I won’t be making a pit stop back to the UK this summer, I thought I would post pictures of the places or things I am going to miss for the theme of my first Thursday Thirteen meme.
1. The drive in to Whitby over the North Yorkshire moors, passing the Hole of Horcum on the way . . .
2. The 199 steps . . .
3. . . . that lead up to Whitby Abbey
4. Walking in to town . . .
5. . . . to go to a cafe for a cuppa tea and something sweet like a scone with cream and jam
6. Drunken nights out to the pub . . .
7. A day at the beach listening to the sound of the arcades, my kids playing, the ocean and the gullies . . .
8. followed by a 99 ice cream cone
9. Walks in and around the area . . . followed by a sit down in the local pub’s beer garden, of course.
10. Taking the boys to ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway made famous in the Harry Potter movies . . .
11. Shopping in York
12. The annual Whitby Regatta (or Regretta as DH and I like to call it)
13. Visiting my family in Scotland

Those are great pictures. I’ve never been there, but it looks lovely.
And the tea and scones makes me want tea and scones. There’s a nice little tea shop here on the Cape but it is soooo expensive. Sigh. Tea and scones should be more accessible.
That’s plenty to miss–and it’s easy to see why you’ll miss it all. God bless!
Oh, I love the UK—but the exchange rate is dismal! Happy TT.
Oh this post makes me want to go back to the UK myself! Im Canadian but while living in England I had access to those 99 cones, no soft serve here in Germany! (Or at least not easily found!)
Great list and pictures. I would love to visit there someday
Another post that makes me long to visit the UK! I loved the pictures. Thanks for sharing them.
I invite you to my TT!
Gosh, even I miss it now, and I’ve never been there.
I’ve never been to Whitby- might have to go visit this summer.
That first picture with the moors is straight out of a Bronte or Hardy book. Gorgeous.
I was going to ask where the stairs went. If I ever get to England, I’ll be sure to stop in at a pub.
Oh I remember that “drunken night” in the pub, didn’t a certain somebody get a little worse fo wear, very out of character for that certain person, but very entertaining!!!!!! What did you drink??? Thanks for making me appreciate my home town a little more.
What beautiful photos. It certainly looks like a lot to miss. I really hope to visit over there one day.
Who? Me? I’ve no idea what drunken night you’re going on about! I only remember a night of sophisticated wine drinking and wonderful free flowing conversation!!
Those pics are awesome. I hope to visit the British Isles for the first time…soon.
Happy TT!
Surely you can have a 99 in Florida. Do you not get flakes?
I spent many a summer in Whitby and York. I love those places. If you find a place like Whitby in the US let me know
I’d like to go there some time. Good T-13!
Wow…it looks like a great place. That ice cream looks heavenly:) Happy TT.
I just got back from 3 weeks in England. I miss it! I love your photos.
It’s been many years since I was in York, I’d love to go back. Or for that matter just to go back to the UK. I used to be there all the time for business but I no longer travel for work.
Great TT…Awesome pictures..You make me want to go. Thanks so much for sharing
Great list, mine is up at Top 13 Boys Names for 2007
I posted pictures of the Northwoods in Wisconsin this week because I miss them. Your photos are great, especially the coffee table. I truly miss Europe, the way of life, the beauty that is there. I don’t blame you one bit, but it was nice to enjoy the places vicariously.
Those are some great pictures. Haven’t been over to Britain since the 80s– I need to get back. Happy TT!
The pictures are beautiful and indeed draw you in, but I hope you can look at those pictures and instead of seeing what you may be missing, looked at what you’ve already gained.
Have a great day!
Nice pictures and commentary. Glad you enjoyed your stay in Whitby and York. Near Whitby I prefer Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes and Runswick Bay which are all within a few miles drive of Whitby. Smaller and more intimate with lots of charm and history.
Did you visit the Captain Cook Museum or look into the Dracula story? Whitby is infamous for supposedly being the point at which Bram Stoker wrote that the vampire entered England!
LOL – aces post, Kaz! I loved it – especially number 8 – looks good. I have never been to the UK but you sisters make me want to go there and get my tea on!
Went to Whitby just last weekend (18th and 19th October) and i have to say its stunning!!
