Happy Yorkshire Day . . .

Today, August 1st is Yorkshire Day . . . a day for all Yorkshire folk to celebrate all that the county has to offer from Yorkshire pudding to Yorkshire tea to Yorkshire terriers!

This date was picked because it was on this day in 1759 that soldiers from Yorkshire regiments who had fought in the battle of Minden in Germany picked white roses from bushes near to the battlefields as tributes to their fallen comrades.

A fairly new celebration, the first Yorkshire Day was actually only celebrated in 1975.

Yorkshire is the largest county found in Great Britain and is located in the north of England.  It encompasses some amazing cities and market towns rich in history as well as beautiful countryside, moors and breathtaking coastline.  It is also where my hometown of Whitby is found in North Yorkshire to be exact.

The white rose is the symbol of Yorkshire which during Great Britain’s civil wars was the symbol of the Yorkists who were opposed to the arch-enemy, the House of Lancaster, better known today as Mancs!

So, here ye, here ye, here ye . . . gather together and celebrate Yorkshire!!  I may just have to make roast beef and Yorkshire puds tonight in honour of it all!

HAPPY YORKSHIRE DAY!
