Jaws …

26 Apr

I’ve always said that I want my boys to have movie-star perfect teeth and for the most part, I have to say so far so good.  I’m terrified of the dentist … I hate, hate, hate going there (sorry Dr. Brennan, I’m sure it has aboslutely nothing to do with you) and the last thing I want to pass on to my children is this fear and phobia.

So, we brush.

We floss.

We eat healthy for the most part.

We don’t do soda unless we’re dining out and then only as a treat.

We visit the dentist regularly.

And, then we brush and floss again.

Yes, this dental regime seems to be working.  My two older sons have never so much as had a cavity and proudly make the no cavity club every time we visit their family dentist.

So, it was quite a shock to learn that my youngest had some pretty severe decay going on in his mouth.  It seems to be a result of his teeth coming in with little or no enamel on them at all.  Why you ask?  Well, I’ve been told a number of reasons for this from antibiotic use in utero to antibiotics he took when he was in the hospital as an infant with pneumonia to the fact that I breastfeed him till he was two.  No matter the reason, we knew his teeth had to be repaired.

Thus far, he’s only had happy memories of going to the dentist with his brothers and I kinda wanted to keep it that way.  After discussing options with his pediatrician we settled on sedation dentistry.  Now, don’t get me wrong, the mere thought of my children having to undergo any kind of surgery and anesthesia has my stomach doing somersaults, but after speaking to all the doctors involved I felt incredibly comfortable with the whole operation.

And, so it was last week with a belly full of nerves and apprehension that my mum and I took my littlest one to undergo dental surgery.

Thankfully, there were no tears.

He went under … in my arms … and with a big snore.

And, when all the dental work was completed, he woke up in my arms … sleepy, groggy and happy.

And, with a great, big, new, metal mouth smile that is so Hollywood.

Well, Jaws from Moonraker Hollywood, anyway!

Oh I am dreading this, as I had terrible teeth as a child, due to a difficiancy my mum suffered with when pregnant.

I was warned that the boys may suffer too due to the medication I was on, but so far so good.

I have just got some disclosing tablets and they are now brushing like loons!

Had that with my youngest son as well.

BTW-for all those with kids needing sedation-the important questions to ask is how the doctors monitor the kids while under.

Yes, that was my big concern, but the pediatric anesthesiologist has such a good reputation in the Tampa bay medical community. He spoke personally with me and went over everything including the fact that he and his nurse would be there the entire time monitoring him with pulse/heart etc. equipment they have there.

just so u realize not everyone monitors well or even monitors. i mentioned it for other parents who may not know that it needs monitoring

Awww, a metal mouth bless. Is he happy with it? Megan hated her brace.

Brilliant way to get the kids teeth done with no worrying of fear or future phobias!

I had the same problem with a number of baby teet. Unfortunately my mum didn’t spring for sedation. Maybe that’s the root of my fear of dentists?

Oh man, that stinks. I HATE the dentist but I go, a lot. Thanks to being very sick through both of my pregnancies, my teeth are in bad shape.

Glad everything went smoothly for the little guy!

Yay for the Hollywood jaw, but still, it must’ve been pretty scary for you! I hate the dentist too.
