Katy Perry too much for Sesame Street viewers?

23 Sep

Apparently, Elmo’s latest duet with Katy Perry has been pulled from an upcoming Sesame Street special because the pop star’s outfit is too revealing.

Hmmmmmmmm …

I don’t know about you, but I kinda find this a little troubling and ridiculous. I mean, aren’t there scarier images on our televisions that we ought to be protecting our children from than Ms. Perry’s bewbage?

Also, there are other questionable characters in children’s television programming that I for one would be more concerned about … for example, the form-fitting outfit that DJ Lance wears on Yo Gabba Gabba leaves very little to the imagination.

My three-year old son is not a fan of the iconic show, but I let him watch the Hot ‘n’ Cold duet to view his reaction.

He LOVED it.

Truth be told, it’s the longest he’s ever sat through of any Sesame Street episode … I think in part because, Katy Perry is such an awesome performer. The segment was bright and fun and he’s familiar with the tune. He didn’t cover his eyes in shock and horror nor did he start crying. He giggled and asked to watch it again!

Don’t some people have better things to get in an uproar over?

Here’s a link to the song so you can judge for yourself …

Too funny. I better go screen our other Elmo videos to make sure nothing slipped past their editors.

I agree- not that damaging to my kiddos. My 2 and 4 year old made me play it “again”, “again”, “again”. Enough. Maybe we should screen primetime tv- we are constantly having our boys cover their ears and close their eyes so they aren’t scared by previews during our family tv time! Crazy.

I’ve been following your site since I started blogging (ok. ok- I’ve been blogging for only a week and a half- but I’ve still followed you faithfully). Follow back in your “free” time!

Too revealing? Kids get to see more than that on a Summer walk through our neighborhood.

I have never heard one of her songs. I am residing under a mossy NW rock.

I think she looked sweet and acted the part lovely for the kids!!! I’ve seen more distrubing outfits on children themselves in beauty pageants!!!!

Weird, I know, but I was asked for a soundbite from one of the teenage bloggers about this (yes, I’m officially old now haha) and I said this:

PBS hired KP BECAUSE of her existing popularity. IMHO they should have made her wear a lightly less risqué top for a children’s programme but that is exactly how she appears in her “suitable for children” pop videos. If she was dressed differently then maybe the young audience wouldn’t have recognised her.

Whoever said that the children learn in/appropriate language from the parents is correct. But, if there wasn’t so many issues about the human body in the first place (hang ups with breastfeeding in public firstly – sorry but it’s got to be said – we’re talking about boobs being almost out there) then maybe this wouldn’t be so much of an issue. I think the(American) religious communities make a lot of the noise that we hear too – their ideals are twisted into a tangible “media” argument so that their view can be put out there.

If PBS hadn’t pulled the episode then it would have blown over within two days.
Now that they have, (and it is still available for viewing on YouTube) it is still being spoken about. In effect they have generated more media coverage for themselves AND Katy Perry, who just happens to have a new single out. Cynical? Me? Of course!

Seriously – such an over-reaction (them, not me… natch)

She’s brilliant on this. A natural. Her fiance would scare the bejaysus out of kids though…
