With Valentine’s day fast approaching and me going to be all lonesome I could cry, I thought I’d put together a list of some of my favourite romantic movies … some old, some new, some comedy, some drama.
My original intent was to try and watch some of ’em with a glass … coz that’s all I can handle … of vino and get all teary eyed, emotional and laugh, but then as I was compiling this list and searching for the movie clips to go along with this post, I caught a load of John Cusack and thought to myself “mee-fucking-yow.”
Then I saw Eric Bana and went “hubba-hubba.”
After which I watched a bit of James Franco and Jude Law and Ewan MacGregor and Ryan Gosling and I thought “oh-kay.” And, well … let’s just say my Valentine’s might not be so lonely after all if I have some of these dudes to spend it with.
Oh heck, I’ll probably still get all teary-eyed, emotional and laugh watching them. Meh.
Anyway, in no particular order I give you some of my favourite romantic movies and quotes from them.
Editor’s note: This was only supposed to be a top ten, but once I started I just couldn’t stop. Actually, I did force myself kicking and screaming to stop because the list could have been a LOT longer. Welcome. And, yeah I know Titanic isn’t on the list. Bite me.
==========
Love Actually
“But for now, let me say — without hope or agenda, just because it’s Christmas and at Christmas you tell the truth — to me, you are perfect. And my wasted heart will love you. Until you look like this [picture of a mummy]. Merry Christmas.”
If Only
“I have to tell you this and you need to hear it. I loved you since I met you, but I wouldn’t allow myself to truly feel it until today. I was always thinking ahead, making decisions soaked with fear… Today, because of you… what I learned from you; every choice I made was different and my life has completely changed… and I’ve learned that if you do that, then you’re living your life fully… it doesn’t matter if you have five minutes or fifty years. Samantha if not for today, if not for you I would never have known love at all… So thank you for being the person who taught me to love… and to be love.”
When Harry Met Sally
“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle in your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
The Sweetest Thing
“If you don’t mind I’d like to do that every hour on the hour for the rest of our lives.”
Eat, Pray, Love
“You don’t need a man, you need a champion.”
Dirty Dancing
“Me? I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.”
The Time Traveler’s Wife
“I wouldn’t change one second of our life together.”
Before Sunrise/Before Sunset
“Isn’t everything we do in life a way to be loved a little more? “
The Notebook
“So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, for ever, you and me, every day. Will you do something for me, please? Just picture your life for me? 30 years from now, 40 years from now? What’s it look like? If it’s with him, go. Go! I lost you once, I think I can do it again. If I thought that’s what you really wanted. But don’t you take the easy way out.”
Notting Hill
“Don’t forget I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”
Moulin Rouge
“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return. “
Sleepless in Seattle
“It was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were supposed to be together … and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home. .. only to no home I’d ever known … I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew. It was like … magic.”
Sweet Home Alabama
“You’re the first boy I ever kissed Jake and I want you to be the last.”
PS I Love You
“You made me a man, by loving me Holly. And for that, I am eternally grateful… literally. If you can promise me anything, promise me that whenever you’re sad, or unsure, or you lose complete faith, that you’ll try to see yourself through my eyes. Thank you for the honor of being my wife. I’m a man with no regrets. How lucky am I. You made my life, Holly. But I’m just one chapter in yours. There’ll be more. I promise. So here it comes, the big one. Don’t be afraid to fall in love again. Watch out for that signal, when life as you know it ends. P.S. I will always love you.”
Bridget Jones Diary
“I don’t think you’re an idiot at all. I mean, there are elements of the ridiculous about you. Your mother’s pretty interesting. And you really are an appallingly bad public speaker. And, um, you tend to let whatever’s in your head come out of your mouth without much consideration of the consequences… But the thing is, um, what I’m trying to say, very inarticulately, is that, um, in fact, perhaps despite appearances, I like you, very much. Just as you are.”
The Lake House
“One man I can never meet. Him, I would like to give my whole heart to.”
Serendipity
“When love feels like magic, you call it destiny. When destiny has a sense of humour, you call it serendipity.”
Cold Mountain
“If you are fighting, stop fighting. If you are marching, stop marching. Come back to me. Come back to me is my request.”
Jerry Maguire
“You had me at hello.”
Bull Durham
“Well, I believe in the soul, the c**k, the p*ssy, the small of a woman’s back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.”
The Holiday
“I have another scenario for you – I’m in love with you. I apologize for the blunt delivery, but as problematic as this fact may be, I’m in love… with YOU. I’m not feeling this because you’re leaving, and not because it feels good to feel this way… which, by the way, it does, or did before you went off like that. I can’t figure out the mathematics of this, I just know I love you. I can’t believe how many times I’m saying it! And I never thought I’d feel this way again, so that’s pretty phenomenal. And I realize that I come as a package deal: 3 for the price of 1. I know my package, perhaps in the light of day, isn’t all that wonderful, but I finally know what I want and that, in itself, is a miracle. And what I want is YOU.”
50 First Dates
“You erased me from your memories because you thought you were holding me back from having a full and happy life. But you made a mistake. Being with you is the only way I could have a full and happy life. You’re the girl of my dreams… and apparently, I’m the man of yours.”
Fools Rush In
“You are everything I never knew I always wanted.”
Atonement
“Dearest Cecilia, the story can resume. The one I had been planning on that evening walk. I can become again the man who once crossed the surrey park at dusk, in my best suit, swaggering on the promise of life. The man who, with the clarity of passion, made love to you in the library. The story can resume. I will return. Find you, love you, marry you and live without shame.”
City of Angels
“I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss of her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it. One.”
Denial
I couldn’t track down any quotes for this film, but it’s one I saw years ago and its always stayed with me. It’s a beautiful, haunting tale of love lost.
So, what say you? Care to share some of your favourite romantic movies or have I pretty much exhausted the list?

Wow, awesome list. Might have to pull one of those up this weekend. Thanks for sharing.
Say Anything…”One question: do you need…someone or do you need me?…Forget it, I don’t really care.”
Sixteen Candles…”That’s why they call them crushes. If they were easy, they’d call them something else.”
Never Been Kissed (my favourite!)…”School is still the same.. there’s still that one guy that you get up and go to school for in the morning. The one with the mysterious confidence that every girl falls for. Those years of school wouldn’t have been the same without him. I wouldn’t have been the same without him.”
