Post Cybermummy …

So, this past weekend I headed to London along with some 400 other people for the mummy (and some daddy) blogging conference of the year … Cybermummy.

Let me tell you, that’s a lot of MILFs in one room.

I tried not to have too many expectations for the weekend, but for me that was hard. I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself and those around me. I don’t mean to … it’s just my nature or perhaps because of my star sign … I am a virgo after all, but I do need to try to do better at that because I only end up being disappointed.

Anyway, I had this clear idea in my head of how the weekend was going to go and sadly, it did not go to plan. And, not because of the event itself, but because of some personal stuff I had going on. So, if I appeared a little scattered throughout the day and evening, it’s probably because I was and for that I’m truly sorry.

Truth be told, I was distracted, overwhelmed and just not present enough to really enjoy myself because had I had my party hat on, I totally would have been in that bar at 3 a.m. singing Rod Stewart with the midget. Believe me.

Don’t get me wrong, I did have a fab time … and took home some very “cherished” memories with me. The highlight of the day for me was meeting soooooo many wonderful fellow bloggers … and I’m so sorry if I miss anyone out, but starting with the shared cab ride in the morning with @michelletwinmum to the lovely heart-to-hearts with @maris_world and @peabee72 to laughing it up with @3bedroom, @cosmicgirlie, @nickie72, @flyingstartmag to finding out there’s a hidden wild side to @pippad, @karamina and @sandycalico to getting a hug that made me cry from the sweeter-in-real-life @tara_cain to squealing with @glowstars over her fabulous shoes.

Finally hugging and putting a face and a voice to these lovely people made the day so worth it for me.

Other highlights and memories I took home with me …

  • Hearing Sarah Brown speak … she really is lovely.
  • Being glad I kept my mouth shut about revealing in a workshop that my biggest hit lately on my blog is my chav post. Ahem.
  • That I should have brought my own cookies because the caterer obviously didn’t get the memo that a room full of 400 women want more than a crumb of a chocolate chip cookie for their afternoon snack. I still want to know who ate them all, so ‘fess up.
  • Maybe I should have found out that there was a famous hairdresser doing my hair before I kinda insulted him by saying he did my hair almost as good as my own hairdresser.
  • That kebabs are just plain nasty as are kebab shops. Ugh.
  • Hugs are good.
  • That I’m not as alone as I sometimes think I am after finding how much I related to @baby-genie’s post about her lists.
  • That bloggers can really touch your soul as did @nickie72′s moving story about her daughter’s battle with cancer.
  • That I really know how to make a dramatic entrance as I made it back from my hotel just in time for my blogger calendar shoot … I prolly look a hot, sweaty mess, but oh well.
  • The dildo party … need I say anymore? @baby_genie’s and mine’s combined bumble bee effort was clearly the overlooked winner!
  • That Travelodge lifts really are the worst and hot as hell.

That said, I am not so sure I would attend such a large blogging conference again. I think it was just a bit too big and impersonal for me. I didn’t really feel like I fit in. I don’t blog as a business, for the free stuff or to make money. My profession is public relations so I don’t need to learn how to brand myself or how to swag the free stuff. I came because I wanted to meet everyone and also for the so-called writing workshop that turned out to be quite the fiasco. I ended up leaving it because I really was desperate for the loo. *cough, cough*

I started blogging back in 2006 not long after the birth of my last child as a forced reason to write … on an almost daily basis … with the end result being to finish my first novel. After listening to Rachael speak at her workshop, she has inspired me to just go balls to the walls (hehe) and finish my novel that’s been this work in progress … mostly in my head … for the past couple of years. I’ve been so unsure of how my heroine’s story will end, but I think I now know.

I am also going to take her advice and publish an excerpt on here in the next couple of weeks. *gasp*

And, then sit back and cringe.

And, then cringe some more, hate myself and wait for the response.

Now, what was I saying again about not putting so much pressure on myself?

The Gallery … 3 word gallery

22 Jun

So, this week’s theme for the Gallery is apparently a take on a feature from Simon Mayo’s (whom I’ve never heard of as I’m far too young to ever remember him) radio show called “3 word [insert day of week] … yes, it was a little confusing for me at first as well.

Anyway, I’ve chosen this photo and my three words are …

Musical Monday …

20 Jun

So, I’ve taken a few of these Body Combat (for some reason I was calling them Body *cough, cough* Pumping) classes at the local gym lately in an attempt to punch out some aggression while also toning up my… well, everything.  It’s a really knackerizing great work-out that combines martial arts, aerobics and fist pumping music …

As you can see, it’s very high energy which is just what I need right now to keep those every day stresses in check.  Actually, sod the stress relief, I just want the guns and buns of steel.  Heh!

Anyway, for today’s Musical Monday I’ve picked this song from the work-out playlist that I really, really like  … it’s called Make You Mine by Lisa Lowe.  Turn it up and get punching …

When I look at you I get this feeling
When I hold your hand I want you to know
When we are as one I want you baby
I’ll never let you go

When you look at me I get this feeling
When you take my hand I feel so alive
When we are as one I want you baby
I need to make you mine

Friday Food Fight … Pizza

17 Jun

 Photobucket

So, last weekend for my oldest son’s birthday I took him and his brothers off to the closest Pizza Slut for none other than pizza.  Dining out at this popular food chain is a lot different over here than back in the States.  Tis a much more sophisticated affair over here … I mean, people actually dress up.  I have to say that it is kinda strange to not see hairy men in wife beater shirts everywhere, but true.   Plus, the menu is posher.  I did notice that they’ve added unlimited trips to the salad bar just like back in the states so you no longer have to perfect the building of a massive one-trip salad.

Anyway, I let the boys pick what they wanted and they did not disappoint by going for the biggest and the best.  They crossed one all meat pizza with another all meat pizza and had it made on a crust called cheesy bites.  Obviously, they couldn’t finish it, but what do ya do.  I kinda expected that.

Afterwards, I took them to go and see the new Pirates movie which was showing at one of the local theatres.  Going in there was like stepping back in time.  It hadn’t changed one bit since the last time I set foot in there … I was about 11 years old and I think I was probably going to see Cannon & Ball.  Anyway, my boys thought it quite amusing and played up on the fact that it was more of a historical experience for them.

I thought the movie was great by the way.

Feminist mum …

16 Jun

So, the other night at dinner, the boys and I were sat around the dining room table.

Shooting the breeze.

As is the usual case every night.

They were talking about whatever it is boys talk about and I was in what can only be described as my happy place … drinking my after dinner tea, eating a Crunchie and listening to them witter on. Each one getting progressively louder as they tried to make their voices heard over one another.

I popped in to the kitchen to start cleaning up leaving my youngest son practically shouting at the top of his lungs so that his brothers could hear him. The kid is loud enough as it is without shouting so I’m sure the whole street could hear him by this point.

I was just about to tell him to speak in his quiet, indoor voice when I heard him say it.

“You’re just like a stupid girl …”

It took me a moment to comprehend exactly what he’d said, but when my two older boys immediately turned to me eyes wide open, I knew I’d heard him right.

“You’re just like a stupid girl …”

And, you could have heard a pin drop as my head spun around like something out of the Exorcist and I looked at my youngest in disbelief.

Oh no, he didn’t.

Did he really just say that?

The teen mumbled something like, “he’s in trouble now.”

And, the tween said something under his breath like, “here we go.”

You see, they’ve had the talk before and they knew full well what was about to come … my feminist mama speech.

What did you say?” I asked the precocious one.

“Nuffin’,” came the response.

“Do you think mummy is stupid?”

“No,” he looked at me shocked.

“Well, mummy’s a girl. Right? And you just said girls are stupid so doesn’t that mean you think I’m stupid.”

“No, mummy. You’re cool.”

“So girls are cool?”

“Yeaaaaaaaaah,” he replied with a cheesy grin.

“You never call anyone stupid okay?”

“Okay. I wuv you mummy.”

*getting on my soap box*

As the mother of all boys, I really feel that I have an obligation to raise them to be respectful of women … starting from an early age.

I want my sons to see women as their equal and not like some “stupid girl.” It really bothers me to hear that comment.

Ugh.

It bothers me even more when I hear other parents tell their young sons, to stop crying like a girl. What message does that send? That all girls do is cry? That they are weak?

Ugh.

It also bothers me when I see a chocolate bar with the advertising tag line “NOT FOR GIRLS.”

Ugh.

Unfortunately, I could go on and on about such things that bother me. It’s 2011 and there are still inequalities in our society between men and women that whether it’s done subconsciously or not, can be compounded by such thoughtless messages. And, if I can do something about that … starting with my young men … then I will.

*stepping off said soap box*

The tide is high …

15 Jun

Yesterday, I took the littlest man down to the local beach for a couple of hours … mainly for me so I can soak up as much of this beautiful coastline as I can before we leave, but I like to think he had fun too.

He’s got an amazing imagination and decided he was going to be a sorcerer and make the tide come in … here’s a few photos of him …erm … casting a spell.

Musical Monday …

13 Jun

Not long now till we fly in to O-Town so this song seems appropriate for a Musical Monday. ;)

Sing it with me now …

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you’ll wait for me
Hold me like you’ll never let me go

‘Cause I’m leaving on a jet plane
I don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go
