Come November 1st, it’ll be official.
All three of my boys will have been a ninja for Halloween.
What’s up with that? Well, I’m calling it Halloween costume deja vu.
As a child, I only celebrated Halloween a few times and only when we lived in the States or on the base in Germany. And, there’s only one costume I can really remember. My Wonder Woman get-up of which the mask was hot and sticky and I didn’t like it at all. The bracelets, on the other hand …
Anyway, I guess it is inevitable when you have three sons that at some point Halloween costumes are going to repeat. After all, they are boys with uncanny, similar interests in swords, cars, trains, pirates and other scary, senseless stuff.
I’m not really the crafty type … I know, big surprise there … but when I became a mother I knew there were specific parts of their childhood that I wanted my boys to look back on and remember with fondness … and possibly a snigger or two.
One of them being that I was determined for them to get a homebaked and not one of those God awful store baked birthday cakes every year. I’ve managed that. For the most part.
Another memory I wanted was for my boys to love board games as much as I do and that come hell or high water we’d have a family game night once a week. Again, I sorta managed to pull this off.
And lastly, that I would attempt to make their Halloween costumes ever year.
Meh.
Sadly, I’ve only handmade a couple of my boys’ costumes which is probably a good thing although the first one I ever put together was the best. It was a road for my oldest son’s 3rd Halloween and it was so original and adorable to boot. But, a lot of work. I hot glued my fingers together making that one. It was a hit though and I still get a lot of friends and family commenting on how fab it was. Other thrown together homemade outfits have been a pirate, a zombie and a vampire.
As fun and rewarding *snort* as it is to make your kid’s costume, it’s so much easier to just buy the bloody costume.
Anyway, over the years, here’s a run-down of my Halloween costume deja vu … I’ve had …
- two pirates
- one soccer player
- one road
- two pumpkins
- two Scooby Doos
- one Darth Vader
- two Harry Potters
- one Buzz Lightyear
- three Thomas the Tank Engines

- two ninjas
- one dementor
- one dalmation
- two jedis
- one stormtrooper
- one Yoda
- one vampire
And, this year, I will be partaking in goulish Halloween delight with one soccer hooligan, one zombie and one ninja.
All made by yours truly.
Go me.
Oh joy.
*insert eye roll*

I’m not dressing up this year, but the kids are going to be Belle and Mater.
We let them pick it out…
Yep! reused is the best when you have 3 boys. this year MJ will be a Dino Ranger. I paid like 40,00 for the thing in 2004, from the Disney store on a trip to NH. It will be reused. I’ve had Bees, Woody, Blue Dino Rangers X3, Red Ranger X2, Clifford the Big red DogX4 <– someone wore it twice, Ghost RiderX2, a dalmation puppy, a puppydog of another flavor, a lionX2, and mario and Luigi. This year, it's the dino ranger, a Red Ninja and the Grim Reaper. Oh and the hubbie will be an Angry Bird.
Oh I forgot I’m “over enthusiastic mom” <—- I'm going to have to cut her sugar way down…
I
Despite keeping all the costumes over the years – to be ‘reused’ I don’t think the boys have re-used much at all.
This yr they are ‘a wheaties box’, ‘Captain America’, a skeleton and an angel.
Will blog photos at a later date.
AND YOU will be??????
Awwwww….what a fabulous post! I love it. “Halloween Deja Vu” lol We’ve had our own deja vu around her only it was more like Emmalynn’s deja vu. She’s never been one for change and well, she likes what she like. She was the Little Mermaid two years in a row. My fashionista, Allana, is more of a costume change kind of gal. Two costumes in one day. God forbid she should wear the same costume to school and trick-or-treating, but last year, I managed to put a halt on that! So she wore her Gryffindor cloak (Hermoine, obviously not Harry Potter) two years in a row. She’ll be dusting off that cloak again for our trip to Universal next weekend.
As far a repeat costumes, my girls both wore the same homemade pumpkin costume when they were two. They’re both so different in personality and they want to be different things. One year, Allana wanted to be Daphne from Scooby Doo and Emmalynn WANTED to be Scooby Doo. Go figure! I know years from now she’ll ask me, “Why is Allana dressed like the pretty girl and I’m a dog?”
You know it’s coming.
Liam will be a road this year, because he loves cars and unfortunately roads too. I remembered Tay’s costume from years ago and wanted to replicate it for Liam. Feel honored that one of the few homemade things you did was held dear in my heart.
I remembered Cam was Blue Clues one year. That was precious. Remember when you all were the ultimate Bucs fans? lol Oh and you’ll have to see if you can find that Thomas costume for me. We’ve got another Thomas fan in the family. I see another Halloween Deja Vu in our futures.
